Climate and Tectonics in the Andes and Central Asia

Highly motivated PhD and MSc students are sought to work on a variety of problems in tectonic geomorphology with Lindsay Schoenbohm. Students are needed in particular for two recently funded projectsin the Andes and Turkey.

1. Lithospheric foundering beneath the Puna Plateau of northwest Argentina. A student will carry out field- and satellite image-based mapping of normal faults, constraining the timing and slip rate by dating offset volcanic and geomorphic features. This will be part of a multidisciplinary project involving paleoaltimetry, sedimentology, thermochronology, igneous geochemistry and modeling. This project will involve extensive field work in the remote, high-altitude plateau, along with trips to various international labs for cosmogenic and radiogenic dating. Both MSc and PhD candidates are welcome. Start dates possible in Fall 2011 or Fall 2012.

2. Evolution of eastern Anatolia from collision to escape. The work is part of a multidisciplinary project involving structural and metamorphic geology, geophysics, modeling and geochemistry. The student on this project will map and date river terraces and volcanic cinder cones along the Central Anatolian Fault zone in order to determine slip rate .Other potential projects may focus on remote mapping of cinder cone morphology to determine the stress field or investigating the incision and uplift history of the eastern Taurides. The student will carry out extensive field work in eastern Turkey, and will make trips to various international labs for cosmogenic and radiogenic dating. Both MSc and PhD candidates are welcome. Start dates possible in Fall 2011 or Fall 2012.
