Research Interests
Steve Scott is the Norman B. Keevil Professor Emeritus of Ore Genesis and Director of the Scotiabank Marine Geology Research Laboratory. His research team is studying present-day geological processes on the modern ocean floor and relating these to ancient features that are now on land. A primary, but not exclusive, focus is comparative studies of modern and ancient deposits of base and precious metal sulfides and other hydrothermal products. Biomineralization whereby bacteria precipitate deposits of iron and silica is a recent activity in collaboration with colleague Grant Ferris.
The group has worked in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans and on ore deposits of five continents. Current projects are in the northeast and western Pacific Ocean, Mid-Atlantic Ocean , Mexico and Canada . The scope of the group's award winning research ranges in scale from regional tectonics to high-resolution electron microscopy and commonly has an emphasis on geochemistry and mineralogy. Marine activities involve the use of ships and deep diving occupied and robotic submersibles.
Professor Scott received in 2004 an honorary doctorate from the Université de Bretagne Occidentale in Brest , France for his marine research and teaching. He was the recipient, in 2000, of an Honorary Professorship from the China University of Geosciences in Beijing and the Michael J. Keen Medal from the Marine Geosciences Division of the Geological Association of Canada. Other awards include the 1997 Duncan R. Derry Medal from the Mineral Deposits Division of the Geological Association of Canada, the 1996 Charles L. Hosler Alumni Scholar Medal from Penn State University , the 1995 Silver Medal from the Society of Economic Geologists and the 1988 Past Presidents Medal of the Mineralogical Association of Canada. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
Professor Scott is a consultant to the marine mining industry.
