Oil Sands Panel Update
There is now considerable promise for a new approach to the environmental monitoring of Canada's oil sands. Two government panels investigated the state of monitoring work and made recommendations for improvement. The federal panel reported in December 2010, and the Alberta Environmental Monitoring Panel delivered its final report to Alberta Environment Minister Rob Renner on June 30th 2011. This report contains a recommendation for a new, science-based monitoring commission to operate at arms length from industry and government.
Professor Andrew Miall served as a member of both panels. For the Alberta panel he was
part of a small group that led the discussion of the science required for effective
management, and helped to propose an organizational structure that would implement the
recommendations effectively.
