Career Information
What can I do with a degree in Geology?
Undergraduate degrees in geology are based on a firm foundation in mathematics, chemistry and physics or biology. The combination of geology with these disciplines often provides employment opportunities in interdisciplinary areas, particularly in service laboratories of the minerals and environmental industries. A number of our graduates have found the geology degree to be sound preparation for teaching careers in high schools. Some graduates have built a business career by combining their undergraduate geological knowledge of natural resources with graduate degrees in commerce, management or finance (MBA) or in law, and have been sought after by banks and financial companies.
Completion of any of the geology programs will appropriate for employment in areas such as mineral and petroleum exploration companies, environmental consulting companies and as assistants with provincial and federal organizations. Most professional geologists have further educational qualifications and our programs provide an excellent foundation for entry into advanced degree work.
The professional geologist now usually has an advanced degree- MSc or PhD. A high B average is usually a minimum requirement for admission to a graduate program. Practical field experience is an asset when applying for industrial jobs. Students are encouraged to seek summer employment with geological field parties to supplement field experience gained in course work.
Several provinces have registration requirements that geologists must fulfill in order to practice as an independent professional. This will require some years experience working under the direction of a registered geologist and/ or supplementary professional examinations. An MSc or PhD geologist might find employment in a range of activities such as research organization in the industry, government or the academic sector, mineral and petroleum exploration and exploitation, water resources and conservation, or industrial and urban waste disposal.
