Course Number and Title: ENV234H1F – Environmental Biology: Structure and Function of Ecosystems
Course description: This multidisciplinary course draws on elements from geology, soil science, and ecology to understand past and present environments and human impacts on landscapes and ecosystems. Emphasis on the structure, functioning and connectivity of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Field trips and labs. Mandatory day-long field trip on a Friday or Saturday (students choose which day; a fee of approximately $15 may be charged for field trip transportation.) (Lab Materials Fee: $25) Prerequisites: BIO120H1/JEG100H1 (recommended) / FOR200H1/FOR201H1; Distribution Requirement Status: Science; Breadth Requirement: Living Things and Their Environment (5). The course is co-taught between Chemistry and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. This advertised position is for .30 of the course including .30 of the lectures and course components (combination of test and assignments). The exact division of subjects and the schedule of delivery of lectures and course components will need to be coordinated before the beginning of the semester with the co-instructor from Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.
Estimated course enrolment: 160
Estimated TA support: 5 x 70h TAs run labs & field trips (1 TA from ES, 4 TAs from EEB)
Coordination meeting (TAs, instructors, course coordinator) in early Sept. before classes start (~2hrs).
Lectures Monday & Wednesday 10-11 am (5 weeks from September-early October, 1 introduction, 8 lectures, 1 in-class mid-term).
Labs (8 sections) Tuesdays 9-12 am, 2-5 pm, Wednesdays 2-5 pm, Thursdays 9-12 am; all labs are run by TAs (TA training ~4hrs).
full-day field trips to KSR field station Friday & Saturday in late September/early October (~8am – ~6pm).
Teaching: September 6 to October 15, 2018 (midterm Monday October 15; 1hr introduction, 8 lectures, 1hr in-class mid-term).
Grades to be submitted to course coordinator within 2 weeks of midterm.
Sessional dates: September 1 to December 31, 2018
Please note: This position includes the completion of any course work and grading not completed by December 21, 2018.
Rate of pay: 30% of Sessional Lecturer I – $8,160 ($2,448); Sessional Lecturer I Long Term – $8,364 ($2,509.20); Sessional Lecturer II – $8,568 ($2,570.40); Sessional Lecturer III $8,772 ($2,631.60) (including vacation pay)
Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Qualifications: A Ph.D. degree in geology or a closely related field is required. In exceptional cases a M.Sc. may be accepted. Experience teaching geosciences at the university level will be preferred.
Description of duties: The lecturer will be responsible for effectively delivering the course with all of the attendant organizational issues of lecture and lab/field trip preparation and delivery, supervising of teaching assistants for Lab 1 (Geology of Ontario: the Don Valley Brickyard), setting, supervision and marking of exams, final course marks, course evaluations and so forth.
